OHE Lunchtime Seminar on 19 April 2016: Evidence that challenges decision makers: experiences and examples

On Tuesday 19th April, Dr Amanda Adler, Chair of NICE Appraisal Committee B and Consultant Physician, will lead an OHE Lunchtime Seminar on the topic of: ‘Evidence that challenges decision makers: experiences and examples. A personal view from the Chair of a NICE technology appraisal committee’.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Technology Appraisal process is highly regarded around the world. NICE Methods Guidance documents and individual NICE Technology Appraisals are regularly downloaded and used to inform decision making in health care systems in high and middle income countries.

Yet NICE is regularly criticised, on the one hand, by the pharmaceutical industry and by patient groups for being too cautious in its approach to appraising medical innovation, and, on the other hand, by NHS managers and some academic commentators for not adequately taking into account the impact on NHS finances of its decisions.

At the heart of the NICE Technology Appraisal process is the assessment and appraisal of evidence.  In this lunchtime seminar Dr Adler will give a personal perspective on the evidence NICE receives and the issues it raises for the independent Appraisal Committees in coming to a decision about whether or not to recommend use by the NHS.
