New NICE Position Statement – 5L Value Set Still ‘On Hold’

NICE has issued a new position statement regarding the use of the EQ-5D-5L value set in evidence submitted to its HTA process.

NICE has issued a new position statement regarding the use of the EQ-5D-5L value set in evidence submitted to its HTA process.

NICE’s position is that it does not currently recommend use of the EQ-5D-5L value set. Those who have collected EQ-5D-5L data are recommended instead to continue to map to the EQ-5D-3L and to use the existing EQ-5D-3L value set (Dolan, 1997), using the mapping approach reported by van Hout et al. (2012).

This arises from the EEPRU critique of the value set. The EEPRU report and our response to it should be read side by side.

We are in ongoing discussions with NICE and the Department of Health and Social Care to help them assess the EEPRU critique of the value set, in the light of our response to that. As we detail in our response, the EEPRU report contains a number of statements we believe to be incorrect.

In line with NICE’s updated position statement, we are also committed to ensuring that an EQ-5D-5L value set is able to be used in decision making as soon as possible.
