Two newly published OHE Research Papers report the methods and findings of the ‘EQ-5D-5L value set for England’ study.
The aim of the study was both to explore theoretical and empirical issues relating to how best to elicit and model preferences, and to produce an EQ-5D-5L value set that reflects the preferences of the general population in England.
The research was led by OHE’s Professor Nancy Devlin and the University of Sheffield’s Professor Ben van Hout. The project team also included Yan Feng and Koonal Shah of OHE, and Brendan Mulhern of the University of Technology Sydney.
The first paper, Valuing Health-Related Quality of Life: An EQ-5D-5L Value Set for England, summarises the methods used to elicit preferences from the general public sample. This paper reports a single value set, which is compared to the original (three-level) EQ-5D value set for the UK and the crosswalk value algorithm used to provide an interim means of scoring EQ-5D-5L data. The implications of the new value set for public decisions made using EQ-5D-5L data are discussed.

The second paper, New Methods for Modelling EQ-5D-5L Value Sets: An Application to English Data, provides details of how the new value set was derived, focusing on the innovative methods used to model the stated preference data. Results for different model specifications, and the impact of different interpretations of the data, are presented and discussed.

Both papers are also available as University of Sheffield HEDS Discussion Papers.
The modelling results reported in both papers relate specifically to the preferences of the general public in England. In a separate project, the study team also collected data from samples in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Those data will be combined with the data from England to produce a UK value set for EQ-5D-5L, to be reported separately.
