LSE-ICL Medical Innovation Forum on 14th October 2015: Assessing Value and Sustainable Financing of Innovative Therapies.

OHE’s Adrian Towse to speak on Options for the Sustainable Financing of Innovative Therapies.

On Wednesday 14th October 2015, London School of Economics and Political Science and Imperial College London will joint host a forum on medical innovation. The title of the forum is: Assessing Value and Sustainable Financing of Innovative Therapies.

This event is particularly timely as the number of innovative medical technologies addressing high unmet medical need and offering significant improvements in survival and patient quality of life has increased in recent years. The high cost and potential budget impact of these technologies has raised concern amongst some decision-makers. 

The forum will be split into two panels:

The first panel is to focus on the value framework of innovative medical technologies. Professor Alistair McGuire (LSE Health) will present on this topic, and this will be followed by a discussion with six experts, including Professor Karl Claxton (University of York).

The second panel will focus on options for the sustainable financing of innovative therapies. A presentation will be given by Dr Panos Kanavos (LSE Health), followed by a discussion with another six experts. OHE’s Professor Adrian Towse, a visiting Professor at LSE, will feature on this panel.

For a previous presentation given by Adrian on a similar topic, see “Can we afford medical breakthroughs for large prevalence diseases? Lessons from hepatitis C”. In this presentation Adrian highlights a recent example in Europe of an expensive, yet very effective, and cost-effective, technology. He discusses methods which have been used to control affordability in the past, and stresses that the full implications (for example the impact on incentives and innovation) of these approaches must be considered. He explains that use of dynamic competition together with options for annualisation are more efficient routes to pay for expensive innovative technologies than budget caps.
